Welcome Dom!

Dominic Okumu has spent the past thirteen years telling stories that matter. Based in Moyo, Uganda, he works as a digital storyteller for Pipeline Worldwide, documenting the organization's impact on communities across Northern Uganda. Dominic's journey to journalism—and to Pipeline Worldwide—is a story of resilience, sacrifice, and a deep commitment to giving voice to the underserved.

Orphaned at age six and raised by his paternal aunt, Dominic understands firsthand the challenges facing vulnerable families. That understanding now shapes every story he tells and fuels his passion for the work he does today. Read on to learn more about Dom.

My name is Dominic Anthony Okumu, and I am a journalist by profession. I have worked as a journalist for the past thirteen years. As an orphan who lost both parents at a tender age, I lived under the care of my paternal aunt and dreamed of becoming a lawyer. However, I had to set aside my dream and pursue journalism instead to give my younger siblings a chance to go to school, as the family was facing financial challenges.

At first, journalism didn't embrace me because of the negative perception some people in government offices had of the profession. Later, however, I realized it was the right avenue to reach people and make their voices heard.

Stories That Have Influenced My Career

There are quite a number of stories that have influenced my career, but specifically with Pipeline Worldwide, several stand out:

The story of Pipeline donating modern and assorted medical equipment to Moyo General Hospital really touched my heart. The stories about the surgical camps, the blood donation drives, the solar-powered piped water system at Agugwe, and the village ambulance systems, among others, have all been deeply meaningful to me.

How I Feel About Working for Pipeline Worldwide

Honestly, I feel super excited working for Pipeline Worldwide as a Moyo-based digital storyteller. It's a dream come true for me, especially after realizing that Pipeline Worldwide focuses on bettering the lives of underprivileged communities through creating opportunities in education, health, community empowerment, and more. This aligns well with my aspirations. Having grown up in an underprivileged extended family, I know how stressful life can be in such circumstances.

This has long been my aspiration since growing up as an orphan after losing both my parents at just six years old. My dream has always been to work to improve the lives of underprivileged people once I had the opportunity and resources. Pipeline has given me the opportunity to exercise my potential and make my dreams come true.
