Evelyn’s Journey: A Mother's Fight for a Safe Birth

Updated: May 31

When we visited Uganda in March, we met Evelyn — a mother whose courage and love for her child carried her across 27.3 miles of uncertainty.

Evelyn’s family sold their only goat just to afford transportation to the nearest hospital. To reach care, she had to hire two motorcycle taxis (boda bodas) and a bus. Along the way, the first boda boda broke down. She barely caught the last bus before dark. Then, stranded and in labor at her final stop, she had no way forward.

In desperation, she begged a young man to break his father's rule against riding at night. He agreed — and thanks to his compassion and her resolve, Evelyn made it to the hospital just in time to safely deliver her baby boy.

Evelyn’s story has a joyful ending — but for too many mothers in Uganda, it doesn’t. The cost of transport, long distances, and lack of resources turn childbirth into a life-threatening journey.

This Mother’s Day, you can help change that.

Honor your mother by helping us make sure Evelyn—and mothers like her—have the support they need to deliver safely.

Walk with Evelyn. Stand with mothers. Give the gift of a safe birth.
