Bridget is 19 years old. She’s smart, hopeful, and resilient. She’s also about to become a mother for the first time.
When we met her at Laropi Health Center III, she was shy—but behind her quiet demeanor was a young woman with incredible strength. Bridget had to drop out of school because her family could no longer afford the fees. Even so, she hasn’t let go of her dreams.
She and her husband William are expecting their baby this summer. They’re filled with joy—and fear.
William is searching for stable work to support their growing family. Bridget is worried about something even more urgent: surviving childbirth.
Her words still echo in our minds:
“When I start labor and have to walk 2 miles to the health center, I don’t know if I’m leaving to deliver a healthy baby—or if I’m going to my burial.”
For thousands of women in northern Uganda, Bridget’s fear is tragically common. A long walk, limited medical access, and the risks of pregnancy without skilled care make childbirth a life-threatening journey.
But it doesn’t have to be this way.
This Mother’s Day, you can honor your mom by helping us make sure Bridget—and mothers like her—have the support they need to deliver safely.
Walk with Bridget. Stand with mothers. Give the gift of safe birth.
